It’s really cool, and I love
to see him finally getting his message out there.
He has a plan you know. All of the
things he is interested in, he is passing on to the
young people and they are clamoring for more.
They have options that do not include
video games. Warren and his friend, Ronnie,
came up with a 3 Phase idea
about getting young folks interested in model car building and taking
them on to
drag racing. His plan teaches students
from design and model car building to
slot car building and drag racing to radio control cars, and maybe
they
will take it to the next level to designing, building, racing their
own cars someday.
In recent years, Mr. Moten’s
Model Car Class has been noticed by businesses,
and community outreach programs – such as the ones I mentioned above.
Alliance Metals approached Warren last summer with an offer to sponsor
10 students.
They are working to help improve educational opportunities in the West
Oakland community.
So Warren not only teaches the students at Phoenix Rising/West Oakland
Middle School
during the week, he also teaches Saturday classes at
Willie Keyes (Poplar) Community
Center, 3131
Union Street, in West Oakland,
CA.
We will be starting up another class at the Poplar Park location
in the Summer with
Alliance’s sponsorship.
They are having another “Spirit of West Oakland” BBQ event this summer
on June 12, 2010.
You should come down if you can. We
are going to have a booth with some
of our students’ finished model cars and a model car show.
We encourage car people to come judge (best interior, best in show,
people's
choice, best engine, etc.) It is quite
an event and always a hit with the kids.
There will be free food, raffles and entertainment.
When Warren and I met, I told him I
believe in what he is doing.
It is a vital and important thing he is doing.
His passion for the subject shows
through to the students and they pick it up and run with it. The respect he receives is real.
The students love him and I do too. When
we met, and I found out about what he was doing,
I just started helping him in whatever way I could.
It was kind of contagious.
Warren is humble and really works with his classes.
He would do it with or without
the sponsors and funding (Heck, he did it for ten years on his own).
When I started helping him, he accused me of, “Doing too much” but
all I wanted to do
was to help him and the young people. It
really is exciting, and your observation and
comments you are right on the money. To
see the respect and the attention his students show,
and in turn they also show to others is phenomenal.
It is, as you said, “amazing.” I have to give him his “props.”
I even think it’s cool
that the class is called, “Mr. Moten’s Model Car Class” and they call
him “Mr. Moten.”
So respectful – as it should be. All I
do is help him set up the shows, get snacks and
document our progress (via pictures, posters and flyers). Warren is definitely the true
passion behind the operation. I am thinking
of nominating him for the Jefferson Award,
because he is doing what he loves and passing the knowledge on to the
young folks.
He is making a difference too. The night of the filed trip, there was a young man,
Aaron,
who came into Eddies because he saw Warren’s van out front. This is a young man that was almost
lost to the streets, but Warren took him into one of the classes and
he remembered him well
enough to stop where he was going to come in and see Warren. They took a picture together that
night at Eddies too. I don’t know if Warren
introduced you to him, but Aaron was another
one of our students.
I am grateful for friends like yourself, Eddie, Janet and the patrons
at Eddies Slot Car World.
Warren always seems so surprised at all the support and encouragement
he is receiving.
He genuinely appreciates you too. I
say to you, keep up the good work!
Thank you, D - again and again
and again for helping Warren and our young people!
You are a class act!
